10/10!

We opened the doors to our tenth Centre of Excellence in St Thomas on a sunny day in April. This marks the fulfilment of a promise made in 2014 by our Patron Denis O’Brien to build or significantly expand 10 Centres of Excellence for Special Needs.

The state-of-the-art facility is the only institution of its kind in the often forgotten parish, catering to students of high school age. It is administered by the Region 2 Office of the Ministry of Education, which identified the great need for such a facility in St. Thomas.

As a result, students above primary level with intellectual disabilities no longer need to travel for three hours to and from Kingston to attend a school equipped to address their specific needs.

The Lyssons Centre of Excellence offers vocational training programmes to include digital animation, agriculture, welding and home economics, in addition to the standard numeracy and literacy programmes. The Centre also works with families to enhance their children’s overall learning experience.
