Starkey’s mission
Four hundred deaf and hard of hearing Jamaicans received hearing aids, courtesy of the Starkey Hearing Foundation. The global organisation committed to providing custom hearing aids to people in need, was on a special mission to Jamaica between June 11 and 12, 2018.
The handover took place at the Chinese Benevolent Association in St Andrew, and was supported by Digicel Foundation, the Ministry of Health, Bob Marley Foundation and Jamaica Association for the Deaf, among others. Those present received custom hearing aids and advice on how to use and care for the devices.
The average cost of a hearing aid ranges between $80,000 and $100,000 - a price many cannot afford.
This is Starkey’s second major visit to Jamaica within a year, as in December last year, the team provided over 800 Jamaicans with custom devices.
The Starkey Hearing Foundation was established in 1984 and has completed similar missions to countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean.
