On Read Across Jamaica Day, May 8, team members and volunteers traveled to St Benedict’s Primary and St Michael’s Primary School, both in Kingston, to engage with and read to students as we continue to work together to broaden our commitment to literacy.

A fun-filled day for all, students and teachers welcomed warm, fun stories and games put on by Digicel employees and volunteers.

Read Across Jamaica Day encourages the donation of books, time and the participation of all to share the gift of literacy.

Residents from Kingston’s Waterhouse community will benefit from the newly refurbished Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Resource Centre, opened on May 15. Through a $5.7 million investment from Digicel Foundation, the facility has significantly boosted learning and skill-building opportunities for young residents, offering training in baking and pastry-making, information technology and sewing. The Resource Centre also has a multi-purpose court for basketball and netball. It was renamed in honour of the Olympic champion by the church she attends - the Penwood Church of Christ which manages the facility.

Renovations included: upgraded bathrooms, newly installed floors and partitions for additional rooms. The centre was painted, electrical work completed and a new perimeter fence installed.

Although she no longer lives there, Fraser-Pryce noted that she, “stays connected” to Waterhouse, which “will always be home”. She added, “Given my level of commitment to the community and the church, it means a lot to be given this honour and legacy.”
