Making sure Math Counts
Students from primary and secondary institutions along with several mathematics enthusiasts gathered on the lawns of the University of the West Indies, Mona, to celebrate the culmination of ‘Maths Week’.
The theme of this year’s Maths Week, which ran from April 15-20 was ‘Math Counts’ and saw several activities take place which celebrated the usually feared subject.
The Digicel Foundation supported the main event, which was the staging of a National Mathematics Exposition on Thursday, April 19 on campus.
The expo provided students, teachers and parents with opportunities to interface with Maths in the real world. The Ministry of Education also facilitated collaborations with the teacher-training institutions to mount concept-based booths designed around topics in the Maths curriculum.
The day’s activities also included a Maths extravaganza and featured cultural performances under the ‘Math Counts’ theme. Several exhibitors were on hand to demonstrate how Maths applies to their profession or the industry in which they operate.
